Toy Trains

The Mountain railways of India-fondly referred to as "Toy Trains" - are among the few narrow or metre gauge lines remaining in operation around the world. Built during the British colonial rule in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these toy trains have a quaint and rustic appeal to them even today. While most of these lines are in Northern India, two are further down south. These railway lines connect important hill resorts with the foot hills, passing through scenic mountain landscape. Constructed on rugged mountain terrains, these lines are considered engineering marvels of the British colonial rule era. The most important toy train line, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. This line, along with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway has collectively been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is still powered by a steam engine, although a modern diesel engine is used for the Darjeeling Mail train.
